Getting the Most from the Conference Experience

Sat 29 May 2010 21:15:13 | 17 comments
Came across this post on tips for getting the most of the conference. While I'd definitely add, attend our UNconference of course, I'd also suggest:
Making a list of those people who are on your "must meet" list and try to schedule a time to connect in advance,
Go with a specific purpose - so many sessions, so may topics/streams, be clear on what information you wish to gain from these sessions,
Participate in the networking and social activities, and finally,
Share your experience and new found knowledge back at the office upon your return...

What are your tips for maximizing the conference experience?

Love you tips, Linda! The first one especially, I think my "must meet" list is growing fast. :)

I'm also thinking:
* Pick out your sessions ahead of time: I want to spend the time during the conference meeting and talking with folks, and learning whatever I can; I can't do that if my face is buried in the brochure

* Drop any remaining threads of shyness: we're all communicators! I found most folks extremely friendly at last year's conference and I met quite a variety of people

* Get out: you can sleep when the conference is over... :)

* Talk to the speakers and organizers and thank them, and thank them again: it takes a lot of work to put on an event like this!
I went through the list of attendees and have no prayer of meeting everyone I'd like to meet. But I intend to make a dent. The biggest challenge is summoning up the courage to barge into conversations -- I'm an extrovert, and I still struggle with it!

My biggest recommendation to everyone is...Participate! Ask questions, make comments, engage -- I speak frequently enough (and teach at Kent State University) to know that a silent crowd is a very tough room. Share more -- take the risk. It'll be SO worth it.

See you Sunday.

Its such as you read my thoughts! You seem to know a lot about this, like you wrote the e-book in it or something.
Achievement provides the only real pleasure in life
It's never too late to mend.
Make yourself a better person and know who you are before you try and know someone else and expect them to know you.
Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.
Never deter till tomorrow that which you can do today.
